The Eastern Michigan University Rowing team is raising funds to begin a 5-year boat turnover plan with new racing shells. Women’s Rowing was established 20 years ago as a varsity sport at EMU and has become a staple athletic program. Our team opened a new boathouse in 2015 on the shore of Ford Lake, just a few miles east of the main EMU campus. The new facility gave us a place to house our boats – and now we are looking to upgrade our equipment. Many of our boats are old, outdated, and of various brands. Currently our fleet still consists of ‘The E-gull’, ‘The Pride’, ‘The Sullivan’ and ‘The green Hudson 4’ just to name a few shells that are all over a decade old.
The boat turnover plan would trade out our old shells for new ones over the course of 5 years. We would not only be purchasing new 4+s and 8+s, but also adding more singles and pairs to our fleet. We know that having newer equipment and greater access to small boats will continue making our team faster.
This year has been a year unlike any other and has brought a new set of challenges. However, our team has taken this on with determination. This season we gained great experience rowing against top-20 teams. We saw success in our 2k races against Duquesne and Dayton, and had great close racing experiences with top boats at Michigan State and the University of Wisconsin.
As our team continues to grow and get faster, we need your help in updating the equipment. Your support of the boat turnover plan will have a direct impact on our athletes for many years to come with a boathouse full of fast, new equipment. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will make a positive difference in our program.
