Every year, the United Nations Association (UNA) at Eastern Michigan University takes pride in sending students to Model United Nations conferences around the country and across the globe.
Paired with an optional course offered every fall, the UNA offers students the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of international organizations and their functions, multilateral diplomacy, and the challenges facing our world today. In addition, students exercise and develop skills in research, problem solving, public speaking, and negotiation that offer great value in the professional world. This is in addition to gaining greater understanding of the functions of international organizations, multilateral diplomacy, and the challenges that face our world today and in the future.
Along the way, we've built a strong, close-knit community on the principles of collaboration and mutual respect. Being part of the UNA doesn't just equip us with skills for the workplace; it also leaves us with friendships and connections that will last long after we leave EMU.
Last year both the UNA and the United Nations itself were faced with the task of reimagining international diplomacy amidst a new pandemic, attending conferences and passing resolutions from our desks and dining tables. This fall semester, the annual American Model United Nations (AMUN) conference will be held in-person in Chicago, and we couldn't be more excited to attend. Due to social distancing requirements limiting the number of people to a hotel room, our expenses are higher than previous years. Your donation will help us make sure our members have the opportunity to be there and participate in solving the world's most pressing issues.
To cover the cost of rooms, registration fees, and travel, we are looking to raise $5,000. We appreciate anything you could contribute towards helping us reach our goal.
"In today's world of polarization, the United Nations, and by extension Model United Nations, continue to represent the best of humanity and our ability to prioritize consensus building and collaboration across geographic and ideological divides. MUN has provided me with avenues for both professional and personal development. I have networked with incredible people across the United States and beyond and have become a more confident communicator. As I move towards graduation, I know I will carry the confidence and skills I have developed through MUN with me."
"Model United Nations provides a valuable learning experience and is a place where I can practice essential life skills. I am able to learn about one of the most important organizations in the world and how the UN works towards resolving world issues. It is one thing to read about multilateral diplomacy or learn about it in class, but participating in the simulation of this is incredibly helpful for learning and raising interest. Participating in MUN has played a large role in me feeling that I have chosen the right path for myself here at EMU. Another extremely valuable aspect of MUN is the skills that I learn and cultivate through participation in simulations.”
"Through this club, I have been able to travel across the globe and attend conferences where I could use my voice to solve world issues. Thanks to UNA, I have greatly improved my speaking and writing skills, and I am beyond grateful for all of the opportunities I have been given through this organization."
“I had done Model UN before I went to EMU, but this has been my favorite MUN experience so far. I have become much more confident in my public speaking, research, writing, and negotiating skills because of participating in MUN at EMU. These are skills that I believe are going to help me immensely in the professional world. As important as those skills are the best takeaways I’ve had from my experience are the memories and friendships that I’ve made. I came to EMU as a transfer student last year knowing almost no one, and in Model UN I found friends and a sense of belonging that helped me make this school feel like home. The UNA at EMU is an organization that I take pride in being associated with, and I truly believe that participating in it is one of the best things any EMU student can do.”
