Building eSports Teams at Local High Schools

This campaign is to raise money for building a community of eSports teams exclusively for high school girls. eSports, which is a competitive video gaming sport, is a $1billion plus industry and is taking the world by storm, however, it is a very male-dominated sport. Although women are 35% of the gamers, they are frequently the victims of harassment or discrimination in gaming. This treatment can deter more women from entering the competitive sport, playing, and even seeking employment in this booming industry. Females often mute their microphones or disguise their identity to shield themselves from harassment. For girls, there are so many benefits to being part of an eSports team:  it allows them access to technology, college, scholarships, and prize money, among others. In addition, eSports improves a girl’s ability to become a leader, be a part of a community, communicate with others, solve problems, have stronger attention to detail, become technologically savvy, and build self-confidence.  For girls in middle and high school, these skills are so important for them to grow into tomorrow’s STEM leaders.

Belonging to a technologically based team has many great advantages for girls that are not typical for most sports and not easily accessible. Building two high school eSports teams in the Metro Detroit area will give girls from underserved areas significant opportunities for their futures. The Digital Divas program, based at Eastern Michigan University, will partner with underserved high schools, whose students are lacking in resources. Each participant will receive a gaming laptop of their very own. The program will support first-generation college students, to help develop pipelines to college and STEM majors.
