It is critically important for geology students to have field experiences to gain an appreciation for the immense scale of geologic processes. All Professional Geology and Hydrogeology majors at EMU are required to attend a 5-6 week geology field course, normally in the Western U.S., to complete their degrees. Students must attend this field course at another university and they cost thousands of dollars in tuition, fees, and lodging. This is a substantial expense for most EMU students who are working their way through school.
The Geology Field Experience Fund was created by EMU Geology Faculty in 2019 with the goal of providing financial support to undergraduate students attending a geology field course or other geology field experiences like the new ESSC 255 Regional Geology Field Trip course. The fund has provided $5,000 in scholarships for students in the previous two years. The goal is provide yearly scholarships while increasing the fund balance to create an endowment that will provide support for all geology field experiences.

" In the summer of 2022, I had the pleasure and privilege of attending the Geological Field Studies course at the University of Michigan’s Camp Davis, located near Jackson, WY. It was one of the most intense, challenging, exciting, and rewarding experiences of my lifetime. The UoM field course is not cheap, and normal financial aid cannot be used to pay for it, so the Geology Field Experience Scholarship from the Eastern Michigan University geology department is one way to put a dent in that cost."

"Although the [geology field] course was a degree requirement, I am very grateful for entire trip as I witnessed the breathtaking beauty of western United States and made friendships that will last a lifetime. The summer of 2022 will be one of my most memorable ones and I am very fortunate to have received the geology field experience scholarship to make it happen."

"I attended a Hydrogeology field camp at University of Minnesota. It was a 3-week course held in northern Minnesota. Since I had already completed a geology field camp the previous summer, I didn’t need to purchase any gear however I still have to pay for travel, food, and tuition. This course was very informative and aided in completion of my degree and helped me find a job. However, this course was not cheap so I was very grateful to have received this scholarship to lessen the financial burden."
-Morgan Bergren, Hydrogeology, 2022 Geology Field Experience Scholarship Awardee
"Thanks to the generous scholarship from the Geology Field Experience Fund, I was well-prepared to take on the difficult challenges associated with attending field camp in the Alaskan interior. It was a transformative experience, both personally, and in my journey to become a professional geologist."
- Shawn Steckenfinger, Professional Geology, 2021 Geology Field Experience Scholarship Awardee
"Along with tuition I also had to buy a lot of geologic equipment for myself as well as hiking gear and other personal supplies. This was pretty expensive which is why the $500 scholarship was extremely helpful, almost all of this money was used towards my supplies. "
